Mary Gilkerson: 90 x 90 From The Edge Paintings

From The Edge LXXXIII,
2012, oil on panel,
4 x 6 in., $265

From January 23 – April 21, 2012, Mary Gilkerson painted a 4 x 6 inch painting every day, 90 total. Through series, 90 x 90 From The Edge, Gilkerson explored the landscape adjacent to the roads and highways around Columbia, S.C. "The edge of a highway," Gilkerson says, "is a strange intersection of nature and culture with a wealth of potential painting subjects. We all move so fast in our culture that we don't see the world in the same detail that people did before modern transportation came along. I hope the project will encourage people to pay more attention to the world around them, to notice the small and subtle as well as the large and grand."
